A Circular Walk at Marloes Sands and Martin's Haven - Pembrokeshire Coast Path

This weekend I managed to convince my family to visit one of my favourite beaches in the world; Marloes Sands. At an hour and a half from Swansea by car, it’s not one we can visit that often, but I try to make it happen every few months just to get my fix. It is one of the most stunning stretches of coastline I have ever seen and I don’t think I will ever tire of it.

This visit though I wanted to do something a little bit different to our usual walk along the beach. A quick google search led me to a 4 mile circular walk all around the Marloes peninsula, taking in lots of different beaches en route. The walk was very clearly mapped out, and had easy step by step instructions to follow, perfect for us as we’re not the best at map reading, and it meant we could feel confident exploring somewhere new.

The fact it was a circular walk was an added bonus, as it is always so much easier to get the kids motivated on a long walk if we are already heading back to the car from the get go.

You can see the walk outlined on the national trust website here. You can see the map of where we walked below. We just downloaded the PDF of the walk and saved it to my phone so we could follow the directions as we walked. It was really easy to follow as it was mostly the coastal path, and there were handy pink national trust arrows marking most of the route too.

When we left Swansea in the morning it was raining, but we decided to trust the weather forecast that it would in fact be sunny at Marloes. As we drove through Carmarthenshire, we had to switch the windscreen wipers to the “biblical rain” setting, and we started to doubt the wisdom of our plan. But we were rewarded with blue skies when we arrived in Pembrokeshire and the perfect conditions for our walk.

By some miracle the children didn’t really complain at all on the walk, and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. Although the boys will deny it if you ask them, so you will just have to take my word for it! The views over to gateholm, skokholm and skomer islands were amazing, and the whole stretch of coastline was breathtaking. We stopped for lunch on the beach at Martin’s Haven, and were joined by a seal. It was high tide, so the seal was so close to us, it was amazing to watch.

When we got back to Marloes we just had to stop in at the Runwayskiln cafe for a drink and a snack before making the journey home. They are only able to offer outdoor seating at the moment, and you’d need to check online when they are open, but it is well worth a visit!

We managed to finish our milkshakes just as the heavens opened. We all felt so thankful we had got back from our walk before the rain. We got very lucky with the weather, and really had the best day. It was great to be in one of our favourite places, but to get to enjoy it in a new way, and explore new areas of it.

Definitely worth a visit to Marloes Sands if you find yourself in Pembrokeshire, or don’t mind a bit of a drive!
